Hey all,
I'm planning to buy a new computer but as I'm new with slack I can't buy any hardware because i'll not be able to solve some kinds of "troubles".
Actually, I'm using a off board network card, and i make it working using ifconfig. I'd like to know if I buy a on board card it'll be so easy to install or if i'll have to do something more?
The standard warning will always be: stay away from stuff that's brand-new.
Don't buy a board with a chipset that isn't at least six months older than
the kernel on your installation media. Safest bets are intel epro 10/100/1000
and the realtek 8139 family.
I'm not saying that a newer board won't work at all, it just is less likely to
be hassle-free...
In the unlikely event that the onboard nic doesn't work, you can always disable it in the bios and use your pci card nic instead.
Better still, do your research before you buy. Simple google search with motherboard model no. and 'linux' will soon tell you if there are compatibility issues
I was looking for some tutorial that explain something about modules(insmod, modprobe,rc.d, etc....)
I don't know how to handle things like this and maybe i'll have to use this knowledgment to make the network card run, anyone has some tuto about it?
The board you are looking at uses
Realtek RTL8201CL 10/100 Ethernet LAN PHY
which I read is supported from kernel-2.6.14 onwards
modprobe uli526x would insert the module if it was not detected at install
really I think you can do some googling and find loads of info for yourself. If it is your first time with Slackware, you could do worse than read here:
