Neomagic and Slack 9.1

I installed SlackWare 9.1 and the install went #1. But when I restart my newly configured system, my laptop freezes when it comes to a line that says :

nm256: Mapping port 1 from 0x2709a0 - 0x27ec00

It did the same thing when I installed the new kernel, 2.6.0. What's the problem ?

Well, I don't know why but I know how to fix this problem.

I recompiled the kernel and in the Sound category I pretty much unchecked everything except the NM256, which I made a module.

When I finished the laptop would boot fine. That's about as far as I think I am going to take the sound issue with this laptop. It's old and I really don't care about sound to much anyway.
