Need help trying to locate cause Slackware 14.1 lock/freeze

When I run ktorrent for about an hour the system decides to freeze and remote desktop and ssh stop responding. The system runs overnight just fine if ktorrent isn't running. What should I poke through to identify the root cause? I think it could be a network card driver issue because the hardware has worked fine for a long time. I need some help troubleshooting. I figure something is putting a load on my cpu and its getting too hot. My system is 32-bit Slackware 14.1 with generic kernel and script created initrd.gz.

When was the last time you opened up the case, cleaned the fans, verified they run at full speed etc?

Even though it will run overnight without ktorrent running, I would suggest you run memtest for an extended period of time to verify you don't have memory problems. Depending on the age of the system, the paste between the cpu and cooling fin can dry out and cause heating problems. That stuff is cheap, and easily replaced. Have a look there also. Power is also a possible area of problems. You did not state what hardware you have. That may help us help you, if you could post it.

Beyond that, it is a process of elimination that will help narrow down a problem like this.

The cpu is old, Dell Optiplex GX620 Pentium D @ 3.40 Ghz. It is clean but another oddity is that lm-sensors doesn't detect any monitors when I issue sensors-detect. I get feed back from my radeon card on temp but that is it. The system seems to be okay hardware wise. Is there an error log I can view also?

just ssh and remote desktop ?
not the actual computer ?

i found out that tracker.openbittorrent.com causes problems for rtorrent
adding "127.0.0.1 tracker.openbittorrent.com" to /etc/hosts stopped it

Well after troubleshooting some more, I have discovered that the issue was revolving around the xfree86-video-ati driver. For some reason the card was getting too hot. I have an ATI HD5450, I installed the ATI beta proprietary drivers and now the video card is not locking up on me. I also had to edit my /etc/rc.d/rc.local to have the line.......

ln -sf /usr/lib64/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/lib64/libGL.so.1

....to get DRI swrast driver to load correctly. There appears to be a link problem with the new driver. Everything is running correctly now and the card runs at a stable idle temp of 60C.
Thanks to the forum and excellent support, I couldn't have figured it out without this forum.
