Need help for some configuration & installation

Hiii ...

I'm still new in this forum and linux.. and this is my first thread..

I want to ask a few question about configuration and installation.. first I want to share my notebook information

HP V3105
Intel Core2 Duo 1.6GHz
512MB DDR2

OS - Windows xp pro & Slackware 11 Kernel 2.6 (dual boot)
Intel/pro wireless 945 abg
Ricoh card reader
80G Hard disk

my problem here are I'm still cannot install nessus on my slackware.. I have tried but always got problem while I'm trying run nessus command .. I got this error message .. nessus*** is not a symbolic link.. fyi i'm using nessus for fedora core 4.. n for client i'm using fedora core 5.

for my wireless card .. when i run iwconfig.. i've got this message .. no wireless extension.. I have installed ipw3945-1.2.0 but the result still the same..

For my bluetooth .. i'm not test it anymore.. but at startup i can see my slackware can detect it.. so anything I can do to test my bluetooth? how to check? how to configure?..

For my card reader.. i was read that the driver still not available.. so just waiting...

I hope you guys can help me.. and if you don't mind please explain in more easier(good for newbie)..

Thanks in advanced

good start - it helps to know something of what we're dealing with

Can you show us the exact command you are running which gives you this error? If you drag you mouse over the command (and it's output), you can rt-click and select "copy" from the popup menu. Then just paste into a reply box when you write back.

However, you may find this blog useful. Includes how nessus was installed to a slackware installation.

Try "modprobe ipw3945", (assuming there exists a file called ipw3945.ko ... and this is the correct driver.)

Try using a bluetooth device.

From the Linux Incompatibility List...
Quote:
Many laptops use Ricoh chips from the R5C8xx series http://www.ricoh.com/LSI/product_pcif/pcc to implement PCMCIA, Firewire, and flash card readers. The PCMCIA, Compact Flash, and Firewire interfaces are supported under Linux. The SD, MMC, MemoryStick, MemoryStick Pro and xD card interfaces are not supported because the chip specification have not been released.
... so you are right. There will be no linux drivers for the card reader until the manufacturer releases the chip specs or someone gets around to reverse-engineering one.

If you need the functions provided by the card reader, then you will have to buy an external one. USB 2.0 compatible readers are well supported.

Personally, I just use a camera to read sony cards, don't use any others. And most folk use a usb key anyway.

... the module didn't get built - no wonder it isn't installed. If you got the tarball off the intel website, you may have to explicitly compile using make instead of slackware's instrallpkg utility. There are instructions in the tarball.

libpcap-nessus.so.3 is a weird thing for a driver to call ... locate this file and long-list it to see what it is. But it sounds like you are missing a library.

The logfile just confirms there is no driver to claim the device.

nessus installation:
... I have provided you with a link to a blog which discusses installing nessus in slackware. I am not surprised you are having trouble installing via the fedora rpm though. Have you looked for a slackware-packaged tarball?

Hi simon.. for your information i'm not running on vmware machine.. that's only the folder that have vmware server source.

about the link that given to me.. I'm sorry, I can't found it.

that's ok..

I'm just thinking.. before this I'm using backtrack then ubuntu .. then slackware 11.
Actually I'm using linux for my work also. I'm using it for pentest(security). so what's your suggestion for me.. I'm not sure backtrack can go far or not (I meant can backtrack do like others such as multimedia, driver support and etc)Should I keep using slackware 11 or backtrack.

OK thanks

I already open this url.. but I only can found nessus installation on fedora.. is that what you mean?.

OK about the lib problem.. It was started when I setup nessus for the first time..
this what I've done.
1.grab package for fedora 4
2.convert to tgz -- rmp2tgz
3.install package
4.update the berkeley db libraray version-http://www.linuxpackages.net/download.php?id=8485
5.copy all files from /opt/nessus/lib to /usr/local/lib
6.run ldconfig
7.symbol linking -- /usr/lib
ln -s libcrypto.so.0 libcrypto.so.5
ln -s libssl.so.0 libssl.so.5
ln -s libdb4-4.so libdb-4.3.so

then try run nessus..

OK
after this setup I've got the message as I stated before..
If this the problem.. how I can fix it back

Thank you

Why don't you install a slackware tgz instead? Or install from source.

Converting the rpm will not always work.

I'm sorry.. I'm only found this package.. and when I find in google only found this way.. for nessus.. but I've already can install
nessus on my slackware but still problem when I tried to install Nessus Client.
root@darkstar:~# nessus

This nessus version has no GUI support. You need to give nessus the
arguments SERVER PORT LOGIN TRG RESULT as explained in more detail
using the --help option.

If you want a X11 GUI, install NessusClient
root@darkstar:~#
root@darkstar:/myDownloadFile# installpkg NessusClient-1.0.2-fc5.i386.tgz
Installing package NessusClient-1.0.2-fc5.i386...

this is the problem...

Thank you..
