Vdpau is just a library, nothing mplayer only. Mplayer actually uses ffmpeg codecs to access the vdpau interface (-vo vdpau with -vc ffmpeg12vdpau, ffwmv3vdpau, ffvc1vdpau or ffh264vdpau), so any player which uses ffmpeg (VLC, Xine, MythTV) has an option to use vdpau, along with Gstreamer.

actually am using vdpau with mplayer/smplayer
Code:
/usr/bin/mplayer -noquiet -nofs -nomouseinput -vc ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau, -sub-fuzziness 2 -identify -slave -vo vdpau -ao alsa:device=hw=0.0 -nokeepaspect -framedrop -dr -double -input nodefault-bindings:conf=/dev/null -stop-xscreensaver -wid 31457295 -monitorpixelaspect 1 -ass -embeddedfonts -ass-line-spacing 0 -ass-font-scale 1 -ass-styles /home/sam/.config/smplayer/styles.ass -fontconfig -font Comic Sans MS -subfont-autoscale 0 -subfont-osd-scale 20 -subfont-text-scale 20 -subcp ISO-8859-1 -vid 0 -aid 1 -subpos 100 -volume 100 -cache 2000 -osdlevel -vf-add screenshot -vf-clr -slices -channels 6 -af volnorm=1,scaletempo -softvol -softvol-max 110
and i know about the gstreamer support. I had the wrong idea about vlc. thanks a lot for clearing that out.

mplayer via CLI but not the one that comes with slackware.

The command I usually run is:
Code:
mplayer -vo gl:cscale=1:lscale=1:yuv=4 -vf pp -autoq 100 -dr video.avi
vdpau usually works ok too, but also sometimes crash the machine.

I use MPlayer, mostly from the terminal, for playing all my audio and video. I have used Smplayer and Kaffeine are they work well also.
