Monitor Poweroff

I have a system with 0.9.15.1 fluxbox. I have configured acpi to turn off the monitor after 15 minutes (i think). Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Whenever I have my terminal open (aterm), then it will always turn the monitor off. If I have a browser (firefox) open, sometimes it will turn off, sometimes not. If I have nothing open, and just the fluxbox background and gkrellm, then my monitor does not turn off.

Q: How can I set up my system so that it doesn't matter what application is open or not, but that it will always turn the monitor off after 15 minutes?

right now this is set in rc.M:
setterm -blank 15 -powersave powerdown -powerdown 60

in xorg.conf, my monitor (viewsonic LCD) has DMPS set as "true"

I think there might even be another setting somewhere, but I cannot remember.

If you have X running you need these in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "ServerFlags"

Option "IdleTime" "0"
Option "StandbyTime" "0"
Option "SuspendTime" "0"
Option "OffTime" "15"

EndSection "ServerFlags"

Here's the reference and change the options to suite your needs:

# man xorg.conf

So, let me get this straight. The settings in xorg.conf are only for when the X-server is running. But they control the entire X-server.

The settings in rc.M will work in X-server when there is a terminal open, but none other time. They should also work when the computer is in runlevel 3.

Okay. Seems reasonable. Except in my xorg.conf file it has the options

blank time
standby time
suspend time
off time

They have spaces and are worded a bit different. I will assume they are the same thing.

Okay, I just looked in the man file for xorg. It has them written with no spaces and capitals. the xorg.conf file that was installed with my xorg 6.9 has the spaces in there, but the commands are commented out. Maybe both will work. I'll try the way that it is written in the man file.

You might want to try, in the monitor section of your xorg.conf file, Option "DPMS" and see what happens.

It seems to be working now, all I did was uncomment and change those option lines in xorg.conf.

I had already had option dmps set for my monitor.
