Maybe it time for us to create a sticky FAQ here...

...because I keep seeing the same questions over and over....

  • KDE won't start... (Not setup)
  • Gui won't start (Not setup)
  • lilo won't work (Improper setup)
  • sata drive issues (Improper setup)
  • video card issues (No driver)
  • sound issues (Alsa not configured)
  • won't boot (Kernel panic)
  • How should my partitions be (/, /home)
  • swap (How big)
  • mouse (Buttons)
And etc, etc, etc...

What do you think?

Not a complete HOW-TO, just answers to the most common issues, so they could have one place to look, THEN ask if the FAQ doesn't cover it.

If people can't do some research to find a solution to their problem, I doubt they will read the FAQ.

True, like how people read the Forum rules before posting/trolling.

URGENT - YO' MAMA SO FAT - BUNTU'S SUCK!!!

I'm guessing that no single issue drives the admin team crazier than what ultimately comes down to pebkac.

Some of us are brand new to the internet, others have multiple decades of experience. I believe the MAJOR difference between the two extremes is that the folks from years past know how to search well, and learned how to search well almost immediately.

The difference between my daughters' (early 20's, grew up with PC's) internet capabilities, and mine, is our search skills. They still sometimes reach out to me to find stuff that they can't, and I often find it quickly and with relatively few keywords, or misses (though, now I find that simply asking the question in google finds the answer....but I digress...)

Anyhow, I guess my point ultimately comes down to an "ibid."

It's a nice idea, but would require a major design change (to be effective (which would result in so much chaos vis a vis flames, confusion, etc))...

...and the gains would appear insignificant as the original problem would still exist, though to a lesser extent.

cheers,

Maybe just a sticky in capitals saying:

SEARCH THE FORUM OR GOOGLE FIRST! YOUR QUESTION HAS PROBABLY ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED!

Or name the thread as "ZOMG Free pr0n!!111" and then mention the forum rules! I guess it will get more attention that way. What? I'm a management student..I'm evil :P

That should hit members in the face in big letters as soon as they log in.

I guess everybody missed thye intent that I wanted...

We here are not "RTFM" or rude people, which is one major reason that this is a VERY vibrant forum. We always take the time to answer the questions.

I was just thinking that it would be nice to have a sticky to send them to FIRST, then we can help.

Admittedly, in this forum, the answer is SOMEWHERE, but have you ever done a successful search? I usually have to wade through TONS of useless stuff, or non-related at all (The life of searches, oh well...), before I find what I need.

I was figuring ONE sticky, that cover the basics ("What filesystem did you choose on install? If you chose foo, then you need to make an initrd. Instructions are on the DVD") or someething to that effect.

It's starting to look like 90% of the q's asked here are the EXACT SAME THING, over and over.

I just thought a sticky FAQ would be beneficial.

You're probably correct, you could always write it, then ask for it to be made sticky.

Tish tish. For a post about reading, you have all forgotten the already available information which can be found within this very sub-forum. Go to Onebuck's posts and pick one at random. Go on, I'll wait.

Done it? Did you see the links at the bottom of his posts in the sig block? Onebuck has trawled the entire internet by hand to compile and distil the information into pages which, coincidentally, fit on a wiki. Go there now - if anything needs to be added, I command you to do so. Then gather the links and publicise them in your own sig blocks.

See also the Tutorial section (link at the top of every page).

Leave me now. It is late and I am weary.

Not sure I agree with the idea of a FAQ sticky as has been pointed out here, there is a stack of info already here for the taking. What I would like to see though is a sub-forum for slack64 as searching for specific slack64 info could definitely be made easier.

So your answer to Frequently Asked Questions for a new user to Slackware (No idea what is going on, except Linuxquestions.org is the "Official" forum for Slackware) is to:
  • Come to Linuxquestions.org, Slackware subforum, and know you have to:
  • First, find onebucks posts. I'm assuming a search (Which has already been pointed out, rarely does the job)
  • Second, go through the posts in his sig, one at a time, until, maybe, you find the info that MAY relate to your issue.
  • Third, since the issue may take more than the post says, to post a response to onebuck's sig?
Let's say I had the good ol' "My Slackware 13 install says Kernel Panic, because it can't find my installed filesystem, reiserfs". How would a newuser to SW know about onebuck? And where would a new user to SW find the link in his sig? Does it relate to his/her question? Would the link say "Rieserfs boot issues for new install of SW13"? Or would it be a different title? What if the issue was a different fs? Then what?

Or, (And this is the part that seems to make sense to me), one of the top posts on the forum says, "Frequently Asked Questions : Start your Search Here for Common Slackware Issues". Inside, one of the
topics is is : "Fresh install of SW13 and you get a 'Kernel Panic' error", with short answers.

I like the second option better. No doubt you mean well, but a sticky-FAQ just seems to make more sense. Easy to find, easy to point to.

Especially since this is the "Official" Slackware Forum. While onebuck has done a marvelous job (I use it too), a sticky here just seems to make more sense. And easier to find. Of course, onebuck's wiki/sig can ALWAYS be linked to.
