Mail Notification beep

When I'm logged on via a virutual terminal i.e. f1-f5 and I get an email I get a beep - this is annoying as I use another mahcine to read email, ...

How do I switch this off [without removing the speaker leads]

Hi,

This will disable the beep completely (not only for mail):

In your /etc/inputrc (global) or ~/.inputrc (local) add/change this line:

# none, visible or audible
set bell-style none

Or just add :
biff n
in your ~/.bashrc to disable mail notification
