linux freezing w/ new ethernet card?!

i'm currently trying to setup a wireless network in my apartment. to do this, i installed a 2nd ethernet in the computer that'll act as the firewall and then connected that ethernet card to the wireless router. the firewall (my internet access i'm using right now) has just had its kernel recompiled w/ any options i felt would allow for a wireless LAN, and then things started to freeze once i had connected the 2nd ethernet card w/ the router attached. by freeze, i mean i'm in KDE 3.1 and everything locks up and i have to restart (and check the fs) twice.

things are currently stable, as i removed the 2nd ethernet card, but i'm not sure they will remain that way. i checked the syslog for the times of lockup and got only this (on the 2nd freeze up):

... (same eth0 messages)

... (repeat the eth0 stuff more, then nothing after i reset)

the above section is notable b/c it cites eth1, the newly installed ethernet card. i'm not sure what this is telling me.

i also made a poor choice in wireless ethernet cards, as i acquired a product that has (what i'm to understand) extremely limited support under linux: the D-Link DWL-520+. provided i'm not being a doofus, this means it requires the Texas Instruments ACX100 driver, which is a project currently in development

http://acx100.sourceforge.net/

i'm trying to get the remote computers up and running, but the incomplete support on the acx100 makes this slow (progress-wise). if anyone else has experience w/ getting the acx100 drivers to work, holler at me about it. how did it go?

thanks ahead of time for reading my ass-long post, and any suggestions on why this configuration locked up are welcome. maybe it was some IRQ issue....?
