Unhappy Dlink ethernet card and Linux

Hi,
I have a Dlink ethernet card. Linux seems to detect it, but it doesn't work.
When linux tries to get the IP adress (via DHCP), it never gets it.
I have tried to get it working with SuSE 8, Mandrake 9.1 and Augustux 0.2, but without success.
I get this message with SuSE:
No IP adress yet, backgrounding

Please help!!

duh- try giving it a static IP address.. type "setup" at the shell , and configure it..

also , to check whether the card is being detected properly, do this
"kudzu -b PCI -c NETWORK"
