kybd works in LILO but not login

first off i'd just like to say i'm not sure whether this belongs in the laptop forum or the slackware forum. but i tried isntalling slack 9 on my laptop and the keyboard would not work even with a usb one attached when i was prompted to select the keyboard map. so i read on other forums that slack 8.1 works and it did, it isntalled fine and everything but now i can get to the LILO screen and choose xp or slack and slack will start up fine but as soon as it gets to the command line login the keyboard will not work but if i plug in a usb keyboard at this point i can instantly use the usb keyboard or my laptop keyboard. after i can use either keyboard i can disconnect the usb keyboard and still use the laptop keyboard until i logout from kde and go back to the command login at which point i face the same problem. I thought i should post it here first because i have read that a fair number of people have had problems with slackware and the keyboard especially with slack 9. if this is a question that should be posted in the laptop forum i apologize for wasting your time but if not any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated

another question i have is since i installed slack 8.1 would it be best to do an upgrade to 9 or am i going to face the same problem of the keyboard not working at selecting the character map or would it just be better to update the individual packages such as kde, gcc etc

thanks in advance

Ok i disabled usb legacy support in the bios and that fixed the keyboard problem but now my usb mouse that always worked before no longer works. Any ideas?
