Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS

I've installed Slackware 10.2 with test26.s (the 2.6.13 kernel). I am able to boot off the CD with "kernel test26.s root=/dev/sda6 noinirtd ro" and log in fine ... but am not able to boot using grub.

Code:
kerel panic - not syncing : VFS
Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (34,1)
my grub's menu.lst :

Code:
title Slackware 10.2, kernel 2.6.13
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.13 root=/dev/sda6 ro quiet
initrd /boot/initrd.gz
boot

i made my initrd.gz following the instructions in README.inirtd (do i have to make inirtd with different set of arguments ?)

I looked around and i read that SATA is not supported by default and that i have to compile the kernel enabling SATA support?

Thanks in advance

that means that the CD has SATA support, but the kernel on the hard disk may not

kernel 2.6.13 supports sata. for 2.4.32 you need to use sata.i (2.4.23 with sata support) kernel

ok i just compiled the 2.6.14 kernel (apparently it does have SATA support by default) ... am all set with the new kernel...but am not able to boot ! i get the same syncing problem (only this time the block is (4.6) and not (0,0))EVen the kernel README talks only about lilo (which is strange?)

... any grub users? some help

well i recompiled the kernel...

the grub doesn't need any Initial RAM disk (initrd.img)...

so my memu.lst is just

Code:
title Slackware 10.2, kernel 2.6.13
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.13
boot
as simple as that .. slackware is wonderful btw fast and easy
