Kernel 2.6.9 Will Not Install

I downloaded Kernel 2.6.9 from Kernel.org. I moved /usr/src/linux-2.4.26 to linux-2.4.26-backup then copied 2.6.9 to /usr/src. Then I deleted the sym link and made a new one to 2.6.9. Finally I did:

make mrproper
make xconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install

Then, nothing. The kernel is not istalled. This has always worked in the past. What's up?

That's why I never use make install, instead I do the stuff by hand :

(from the kernel directory)
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.9

Then I add a new entry for kernel 2.6.9 in my bootloader conf (grub) and I reboot

when u did make install did nothing at all happen or was the kernel image sent to /??

When you wish to use make install edit line 515 (for 2.6.9 kernel) to include your installation directory.

i.e. if you wish to install image in /boot, just remove the # symbol to uncomment the line.
