I recommand Blackbox or Fluxbox both are ultra light weight in memory and are blazing fast
KDE and GNOME are more like toys for the eyes they add functulity yes, but anything KDE or GNOME can do so can the CLI.
I've also used fluxbox and made myself a nice desktop but lateron i realized that i wanted an window manager that's pretty nice out of the box, a little eye-candy but still very fast and right now i'm working with XFCE
windowmaker sucks ( for me ) , hmm i`ll try to install fluxbox... i heard about this, but i thought it was a fancy desktop wich requires a fancy machine ( not one like my server ).
I'm a huge blackbox fan, so that would be my recommendation to you. Its quick, light, very easy to use and configure. I personally see fit to use it on all my linux machines, regardless of spec
I've heard a lot of people happy with xfce, so that would be an option. I personally use fluxbox most of the time... regardless of my system specs. It's fast and light, and easily customizable. And it has a tiny footprint. Even installing from source, the build and install only take a couple minutes on a relatively quick machine... and probably not much longer on an older machine. I can't say off hand how big flux is once it's all installed, but with such a quick build, it can't be very big. With only 1.5 gigs of hdd space, I'd definitely recommend fluxbox just because of the space consideration.
