KDE can't remember settings for .dat files

Hey,
I have some movies/videos as .dat file ext (the old VCD type). I open them with mplayer easily and it works (thru Konsole). But in KDE File Manager, if I right click and click on open with for a .dat file ... I can type in mplayer and can tick the box title "run in terminal". But the box titled "Remember Application Association for these types of files" is greyed out. How can I fix this? I want KDE to remember the file type and association with the application.

I don't think KDE allows you to add a default action to the "Unknown" file type, at least not through the "Open With..." dialog. You'll have to add it as a new file type (using the "File Associations" applet in the KDE Control Center).

You may want to consider using a different filename extension, though; with .dat you're likely to get a bunch of false positives since a lot of different programs use this extension for a lot of different things.
