Kde 4?

I figured that I would ask, just because I read some interesting things about KDE 4. Does anyone know how soon the official slack packages for KDE4 will be available? Or does this sound like it will be available only for Slack 13?

Well, you can check the intel current changelog from time to time and see what new applications are being tested. I'm sure KDE 4 will make it in at some point when Pat deems it stable enough for Slackware.

I've got kde4rc2 (3.97.0) packaged and installed on a test box, and quite frankly, it's just not something that I'm comfortable releasing for public consumption.

It's noticeably faster than kde3 for sure, but there are still lots of rough edges. It's going to be nice one day, but not today.

DISCLAIMER: that's just *my* opinion - don't perceive that as speaking for Slackware.

Kde4 won't be released until it (actually Kwin and its effects) works with Nvidia cards properly.

Is it possible that kde 4.0 will be added in testing and released with slackware 12.1 ?

I doubt it works properly with ATI either.

Highly highly highly highly doubtful.
That being said, it's not my decision to make, so don't take my opinion as anything more than that. If it *were* my decision, then no, there's no way it's going into 12.1 in any way, shape, form, or fashion.

I agree. Do you think Qt4 could be available though? I don't mind building KDE by myself (the KDE team does really a great job at packaging their project), but building Qt does seem to be quite a hassle.

I read an advice from Troy Unrau lately. It does fit quite well to Slackware:

Quote:
If you are the type of person that was bothered by Apache 2.0 not being as well tested as 1.x, and you weren't the first to try using kernel 2.6.0 because your uptime was more important, please keep using KDE 3.5.8 for now. Bug and security fixes are still accepted against the 3.5.x branch, and a 3.5.9 release would not be unrealistic development in the future.
