Java isn't registering for anything but OpenOffice?

I've used PV's slackbuild to install JDK 8u211. Everything installed correctly. But after logout/login if I issue the command $ java -version I get back command not found. If I start OpenOffice and check settings for java it shows Oracle Java 8u211 available. Now what is it about OO that picks up Java but the regular bash doesn't? I'm trying to get this working so that LanguageTool can properly run. If I use the commands the Slackwiki suggest about exporting JAVA_HOME, etc. then languagetool-gui will start from that bash shell but LanguageTool won't start from the XDG menu item of any WM/DE. Advice on what to check next?

Never mind. I found the answer in a 2014 LQ thread. It turns out my download of slackware64/extra/java was missing the profile.d directory and its files. Sorry
