is that the driver? if so, you need to make sure there's support for it in your kernel, then add
/sbin/modprobe Via823x

(or whatever is the driver, that doesn't sound like a sound driver to me, but i could be wrong)

to /etc/rc.modules.

if that's not the driver, search google to find out the name of the driver you need. then compile it into your kernel as a module and add it as above. gl

From my googling, I think your card will most likely work best using the AC97 modules or drivers which should be supported in the latest release of Slackware.

Its not a very popular sound chip from what I could find, some searches showed it worked with the OSS drivers but would give weird errors at times.

Try searching this site using AC97 which these are popular chipsets that are in use and its asked quite frequently.

Cheers.

i have that sound system too on my mobo and slack does install it, it is just that alsa has muted everything. run alsamixer from the command line and you will see. when you make your changes, hit the Esc key to exit back to the cli, the as SU type alsactl store and all should work, might need to log off and back on.

if that works and your sound is all scratchy, add this line to your /etc/modules.conf file

options snd-via82xx index=0 dxs_support=2
