just upgraded my kernel to 2.6.7 from the standard provided with slack 10.0, after completeing this, when booting the new kernel i no longer can see my console. X works but also my sound does not, alsaconf finds the card and loads the modules, please help.
The computer in question is a toshiba satellite pro 4600
I would guess that vesa framebuffer feature is not compiled as built-in in kernel or console framebuffer is missing.
You can always boot with vga console by edit your lilo.conf and put a kernel parameter as :
append="vga=normal"
Try if it works
thanks for the help guys, my console now has video, however sound is still a problem.
alsaconf finds the card loads the driver but still no sound and alsamixer finds no devices (same with rexima)
im having the same sound problem via the sblive. it detects the card fine, but it just wont give me sound output. i recompiled the 2.6.7 again, and got sound on first reboot. halfway through a song, the comp freezes (but i can still move mouse pointer but cant click anything), so i reset it to find the sound gone once again... :/
For sound issues check /var/log/syslog and look for error messages related to your sound card driver? Then you can look up the error message on google and see if you have to pass the driver a parameter. It would help us diagnose the problem if you could post relevant information from the following files:
/var/log/syslog
output from lsmod
output from lspci -v
/etc/modules.conf
Sometimes alsaconf does not detect the proper sound card. Good luck!
