installing a new hd in


it shows up in the post . And in the linux boot screen as hdc , How do i turn this into usable space

I guess this a fresh hdd you've installed. You'll have to partition it and then format it with the filesystem of choice.

You can partition it using cfdisk:
Code:
cfdisk /dev/hdc
Then, format it with the partition of choice, eg reiserfs:
Code:
mkreiserfs /dev/hdc1
This will format the first partition on the disk.

You can then mount this on a mountpoint, or add the disk to /etc/fstab to make it mount on boot.

You'll have to be root to do all this.

i tried adding it to the fstab file ,but it gives me this:
[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab
mount: fs type ext not supported by kernel
root@Bambi:~#

It doesn't show up in cfdisk , so like how to I like format it

somebody help me please

thanks cor67393 I didnt think of using the cfdisk command like that

This the line i added to fstab :



/dev/hdc5 /home reiserfs defaults 1 1




and this is what i get when i do mount /dev/hdc5

[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab

what am i missing?

Try adding a new, empty line at the end of the file?

Just to be on the safe side, can you mount it using:

mount -t reiserfs /dev/hdc5 /home

And is there already a directory named /home?

i made a couple of blank lines at the end of fstab and then tried mount /dev/hdc5
and it said that it was already mounted. so i checked /home and I now i have gigs.thanx ag
