Increase locked memory available to users

I'm running Ardour, and when I launch it I get the following:

Code:
WARNING: Your system has a limit for maximum amount of locked memory!
This might cause Ardour to run out of memory before your system runs
out of memory. You can view the memory limit with 'ulimit -l', and it
         is normally controlled by /etc/security/limits.conf
Turns out that my max amount of locked memory is indeed pretty pathetic:

Code:
gene@lemon:~$ ulimit -l
64
So how can I increase that, short of installing PAM (which I REALLY don't want to do)?

thanks!

Why not set it in a script that you put in /etc/profile.d ?

I performed that modification the the /sbin/initscript file, but that page provides no instructions for creating the /etc/profile script... it just says to make one. What should the script contain?

I'd like to resurrect this thread. I still haven't figured out how to increase the locked memory available to individual users. I understand that an /etc/profile script needs to be created, but I don't know what to put into it.

I've been doing some research into this, and it seems that I might be able to get what I want with setrlimit... can somebody give me an example of how that command might be used? The manpage read like gobbledegook to me.

On the off chance of learning something new...
I took the /sbin/initscript.sample file and copied it to /sbin/initscript.

I added this line after the first ulimit command (and rebooted):
ulimit -Hl 96

This set the hard limit for the maximum size
that may be locked into memory to 96 (from 64).

Then as the non privileged user I could run the
following command:

ulimit -l 96

to increase the users soft limit for the maximim
size that may be locked into memory from 64 to 96
(to match the new hard limit).

or just add the command to end of /etc/profile?

HTH
