I broke my wireless connection... Unable to get IP address

Hello:

I installed Wicd from the Slackware DVD and was successfully connecting to the internet for the past few weeks.

I do not know if the following caused my problem or if it is something else that I did:

All of a sudden (probably something that I did) the wpa_gui screen started to appear on my desktop. I just closed it.

Today, in a moment of stupidity, I said "Who needs this wpa-gui thingy?! I know, I'll just use pkgtool to uninstall it. Then, if I need it, I'll just use pkgtool to reinstall it!" So, I did. After my next reboot, you guessed it, no wireless.

Wicd seems to do everything it used to do, except connect. I get the error msg "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address." I see my 'connection' listed and it is still set to "Automatically connect to this network" but it doesn't.

So, is it the wpa-gui app that I 'uninstalled' or is it something else that I might have done?

I don't know what listings I should include to help you help me so, please let me know.

If you guys have the time, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

If "uninstalling wpa_gui" means you ran "removepkg wpa_supplicant" and your network is encrypted, then yes, you did something stupid.
The wicd program does not work all on its own, in true UNIX tradition it uses all kinds of programs which are installed on your computer to connect you to the network. And wpa_supplicant is one of those.

Thanks.

I don't know if my stand alone PC is encrypted - not 'intentionally' by me.

Is there anyway to recover from this or I am reinstalling, again?

You do not give much information do you? You are using a wireless connection, right? If so, and the acccess point is using WEP or WPA encryption then you need the wpa_supplicant pacckage.
If, on the other hand, you are connecting to the network through a LAN cable, then wpa_supplicant is not needed... and neither is wicd but that's another story.

Find the wpa_supplicant package on the DVD you bought in the Slackware Store, and run "installpkg /path/to/wpa_supplicant-*.txz" to get it back on your system. No need to re-install from scratch.
