I've installed slackware weeks, but I always have a question about vi.

I found the vi in slackware can't delete the existent characters! If I press "Delete" or "<-", the mode will change from input to commend! It's too strange! How can I delete the existent characters?
Thanks!

I don't know why those keys are changing the mode, but I do know that you can delete characters in command mode by pressing "x". (And whole lines by pressing "d" twice.)

hi there
i used to do that with relink the charcters with "space"
slackware uses a different editor to vi ,it is elvis i think

do this to get the standard vi

relink vi to vim
and copy vimrc file form any other distro to the home directory of ur user account in slackware
i used to that this way only

regards

The vi command is Slackware is a link that points to the elvis editor. To customize the editor you need to start elvis (use vi or elvis command). Then type : then mkexrc, while in your home directory. This will create a .exrc file. Then you can map the keys and such. Here is a link to a page that explains what the mappings are.

Hope that helps.

This explains my problems with vi in Slackware. I was beginning to dislike vi. I think i will just relink vi to vim.

There's an example vimrc file in Slackware but you've to copy it manually to ~/.vimrc or /etc/vimrc, it's called /usr/share/vim/vim63/vimrc_example.vim
Vim's default behaviour with this file is kind ugly :P
