Hplip wouldn't work for my Laserjet 1000 (ten years old, still works like a champ), on Slack 13.1. I had to use foo2zjs instead:

Still having issues

I got the software for hplip ver 3.11.10. It seems to work good as far as it goes. I have edited the /etc/hosts/ file using root to 192.168.1.116. This is the id on the network but when I run hp-setup it will not recognize this ip. I can install a later version but I did receive problems when I tried to do this. Any other ideas?

Still having problems

I edited the hosts file to 192.168.1.116. This is the file that you can see on the printer and the ip address you can see when you ping it. It shows up on the network. I have also used lsusb and attached a cable. I think my box is working ok and the program is correctly installed. I have run the hp-setup and hp-probe commands with no luck. They don't find anything. Any ideas it must be something very simple but I don't see it.

When you run hp-setup, do not run it as root (it actually won't let you do that but you can force it and you don't want to do that) -- run it as "you" and you will be required to enter the root password.

If hp-setup does not find your printer on your LAN, click the advanced options tab and manually enter the IP address of the printer Manual Discovery section (be sure and check the box too).

It would be a good idea to set the address of the printer to something below 102.168.1.116 (that's DHCP country). Try something like 192.168.20 or so (doesn't really matter as long as it's below 192.168.1.100).

You should be able to ping the printer. If you add or edit an entry in /etc/hosts something like
Code:
192.168.1.15 LaserJet
you should be able to
Code:
ping -c 5 LaserJet
If you cannot, double check the setting in the printer's set up page (to use fixed IP, you need to set the address in the printer's menu).

Until you can ping the printer you're wasting your time trying to run hp-setup (it'll never find the printer if you can't ping it).

Hope this helps some.
