how to make Slackware 10 realised DNS setting changed?

Hi!

I would like to know how to make the system realised that I have changed the /etc/resolv.conf without rebooting?

If possible, I do not want to bring down ./rc.inet1 (bring down network interfaces).

Thanks

Logically the system should take in account the changes in /etc/resolv.conf as soon as you save
the file. You probably did a wrong syntax.

I don't think I did a wrong syntax.

1. dig <webaddress> works
2. the syntax is just nameserver <ip>
search <domain name>

However, ping or any other prog can't resolve the address. Just dig can.

Cedrik, you are right, (not about wrong syntax). I just tried out another DNS server and it works straight away. There was some changes with the network which blocks the DNS server which I was using. The funny thing is, dig works but not other programs. Thanks.

What port does dig uses and what is the normal port for resolving address?

It should be UDP 53, when you said "dig works but not others", are you sure that it answers
correctly ? (status: NOERROR and right adresses at ANSWER section)

absolutely positive that the answer was correct.

So is there something which dig is doing and not other progs (including ping).

If I use 161.142.2.17 in /etc/resolv.conf, I can't resolve address using other apps. But if I use dig: I get the following.
Code:
root@fire:/# dig @161.142.2.17 google.com

; <<>> DiG 9.2.3 <<>> @161.142.2.17 google.com
;; global options: printcmd
