How to create/install a custom CUPS version
I have a printer that is connected to a usb print server (USR5461). Unfortunately the printer doesn't work via the usb print server. The reason for this is the the print server doesn't fully support the ipp protocol. With a small change in ipp.c I can get my printer working. I have already done it on Fedora Core 2 and now I want to build a custom version for Slackware 12. What is the best strategy to do this? For example:
- remove the current cups version with removepkg and
- configure make and make install
or
- directly configure make and make install without the removal of the current version
or
- remove the current cups version with removepkg and
- create a tgz of the custom cups version
- install the new cups.tgz with installpkg
