How I got Team Fortress 2 running well on open source Radeon drivers.

My oh my how open source drivers have come a long way. From only 2d support to full fledged 3d support that runs well enough for me at least. Anyways, I'm gonna explain how I got TF2 to run perfectly on steam using the open source Radeon drivers. I'm in Slackware Current.

First off, the graphics card I used was an AMD Radeon HD 6670.
As for Mesa. IT's the latest one in current.

First off, install steam. Thanks AlienBob!

Now you need the library libtxc_dxtn which is in this slackbuild. Or search it via SBOPKG.

http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14...s/libtxc_dxtn/

This provides Texture compression needed. Also to help with the Frame rate you may want to look at DX9Frames which Linux Game Cast made a great tutorial on how to get that to work.

http://linuxgamecast.com/2012/11/l-g...ith-dx9frames/

I get around 40 at the lowest and 100 at the highest! It stays around the 60 range the majority of the time. I would love someone to reply to test how well the Nouveau and Intel Open source drivers work.

Happy gaming fellow Slackers!

So you are using the r600g driver?

Code:
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV630
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.1 (Core Profile) Mesa 9.2.1

Well, let us see your OpenGL string.

All you did was copy the OpenGL string from my Gentoo install.

Let me see the output of
Code:
lspci | grep -i VGA
and
Code:
glxinfo |grep OpenGL
Here are mine for a 6770
Code:
gentoo-asus ~ # lspci | grep -i VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Juniper XT [Radeon HD 6770]
gentoo-asus ~ # glxinfo |grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD JUNIPER
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.1 (Core Profile) Mesa 9.2.1
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 1.40
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 9.2.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL context flags: (none)
OpenGL extensions:
