How do i acess my usb camera ?

Hi

Ive checked and the required filesystems are in place , The usb device is also detected in proc/bus/usb

The problem is i dont know what device it is, I have tried

mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cam
mount /dev/sr1 /mnt/cam
mount /dev/sr2 /mnt/cam
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/cam
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/cam
mount /dev/sg0 /mnt/cam

And various others but i get no response although sr0 is my cdrom

What i need to find out is how i link a device file to the cam or what means i can use to determine what device i should be using.

This is a new problem to me and i dont really know where to start.

I have a scanner (Mustek Bearpaw CU Plus)connected to the second usb port which works fine.

The camera has got me stumped

Thanx cheers.

I can't recall which device I use for my usb stuff ... however, have you got the right modules in your kernel (either compiled in or modprobe/insmod-ed in)?

You need the usb-storage stuff usually as most cameras are accessed as a hard drive.

Hi

I have compiled most stuff directly into the kernel so basically if i list the modules , none are loaded as they are compiled in

I just dunno how to find out what device the camera is using.
I shouldnt have to make the device.

The thing is if i was using modules and the module loaded , how does the module know what device to link to so that the device can become usable ??

Thanx for your reply though

does /proc/scsi/scsi help? (I'm going from memory...)

also, you might find some camera-specific info here:

it should be something like /dev/sda1 or /dev/sdb1

When I plug mine in, it's normally /dev/sdb1 since I have a USB key in as /dev/sda1

I had the same problem as you when I was setting my webcam up for the first time and having no idea on how to access it, my camera is working now and I access it through /dev/video0.

Have you tried plugging it in then typing dmesg in a terminal. If I do this with my usb card reader it says:

SCSI device sda: 15872 512-byte hdwr sectors (8 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off
sda: sda1

I mount the folder on /dev/sda1
