Any more details on this laptop, like the brand ? Are the fans running ? Make sure the 'processor', 'thermal', and 'fan' modules are modprobed.

Is it anyone that can help me be a happy slacker? Need help with the heat problem, and another thing like boot time. I use the "compact" option in lilo.conf but it still use a lot of time booting.

Try the generic kernel with initrd.

Are you using Nouveau or the Nvidia binary driver?
Nouveau has (more or less) no power management features.

Try some compressed air to clean to vents and fans too

Some questions and ideas:

How are you measuring temperatures?

Does your BIOS provide a method to regulate fan speeds? For example I have some Asus motherboards and the BIOS provides an option called Q-Fan to control fan speeds.

In /etc/rc.d/rc.modules is a kernel module option you'll want to use with an AMD 64 CPU. Make sure that option is enabled by removing any hash mark (#) at the beginning of the line:

/sbin/modprobe powernow-k8

Look at rc.modules to ensure the CPU frequency modules are loaded. The ondemand module is the most popular:

/sbin/modprobe cpufreq_ondemand

In addition to editing rc.modules, you can load these modules manually using the same commands.

You can verify the modules are loaded using the lsmod command.

The stock 13.1/13.37 comes with a set of utilities called cpufrequtils. After you ensure the correct modules are loaded, you can use the cpufreq-info command to check the CPU frequency. If you are using an older version of Slackware then you can obtain that package from slackbuilds.org.

I don't know anything about your hardware, but look into lm-sensors and the pwmconfig utility to control pulse-width-modulated (PWM) fans.

One of the many reasons this driver should not be used unless you are testing, or helping develop.

Thanks, I agree. I don't think it should be considered stable or safe to use until they get this done.
