I really think I'd be more comfortable with Slackware. My first question is can I download the .iso image for 8.1 off the mirrors, it is listed as 657mb, but my cdr is only good for 650mb. Also it says you can order the 4 cd set of slackware, why are there 4 cd's when you just need one for the .iso image?
I've burnt mine onto a 700, and never tried a 650 one.
But the stuff according to du -m /cdrom actually occupies
657, so I'd think you'll need a bigger CD....
ahh go for gentoo. once you've got it installed it's so so simple to keep completely up to date. certainly so much cleverer than slackware. the install is a little involved, but the step by step docs take you straight through it. personally i felt a little cheated when it worked flawlessly first time...

I agree that Gentoo has excellent maintenance tools. But I've been using Swaret for Slackware -current, though, and it works like a charm. Not as good as portage, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.
I like both distros very much. Slackware I know better, but am learning gentoo fast. Gentoo does have quit an invovled install, as mentioned, but it is SO worth it. I installed gentoo on my gaming rig at home (started from stage1) and it flies!
