well, here's my story...
i have been trying linux flavors for about 2 years now, redhat, madrake, suse, knopix, etc.... never finding the one that made me happy because i would install it and then be like "now what?" or i would install then be unable to do what i wanted due to missing packages in my distro. yet i was driven to love linux and all it stands for, i needed more. so yesturday i decided to try the long, scary, hairy, and sometimes tedious installation of gentoo(stage1 tarball). since i still have a windows xp partition i have to dual boot, this is scary sometimes as i have had distros hose my boot loader. i printed up the entire install from gentoo.org and nervous and sweating i inserted the gentoo live disc and rebooted.......
.................now it is almost 24 hours later and i am happily sitting in front of a working gentoo install. all my fears layed to rest, yes it was scary at times hitting the enter key, but it actually was not as hard as it seemed. in fact i would now recommend doing a stage1 gentoo install to all linux novices wanting to learn a little more about it all. i still have to setup the kde desktop eviro (its emerging now) but am very confident i will be the happiest yet with this distro (something about options and being built for my system). my goal when i am done is to get cedega working for world of warcraft, the last key in the death of windows! once i have wow working to sat, as well as maybe one or 2 other win apps, i can then rid my system of the gates virus. and what of the windows partition? my dual boot went smooth as butter.......grub is a beauty.
in conclusion try gentoo! maybe try going outside or bathing once in a while too....but thats another story.
Gentoo will be something i want to play with after i have learned more of Linux. After around 8 years of Windows, im ready for a change so, about 5 days ago, i was looking on here re: Linux and now, im happily running Mepis! Its great. I love it and its FREE
After a good few months when im confortable with comands and such, then ill look more closely at Gentoo.
