Having problems compiling kernel 2.6.16

Hi all,
I am trying to compile the kernel 2.6.16 as per the method delineated here -
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=127095
extracted the kernel source to /usr/src/linux-2.6.16/
then from /usr/src I gave the following commands

$ rm -f linux
$ ln -s linux-2.6.16 linux
$ cd linux
$ make mrproper
$ cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.9/.config /usr/src/linux
$ make oldconfig
$ make xconfig

made the necessary alterations / selections here and then

$ make
$ su -c "make modules_install"
$ make install

everything goes on fine. But the vmlinuz-2.6.16 is not being added to /boot, nor are the other files.
Where am I going wrong? What else do I have to do? Any suggestions?

You shouldn't use make oldconfig between major versions, it will be fine from 2.6.15 -> 2.6.16 but from 2.4.x -> 2.6.x is not a good idea. You should configure it yourself.

I've never used make install, just copy the ./System.map file and ./arch/i386/boot/vmlinuz to /boot and modify your boot loader.

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt reply, and I am sorry to have posted the same thread twice.
As per the advice given by you, I was able to successfully compile the kernel. I made a new entry in the lilo -
-----------------------------
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16
root = /dev/hda5
label = slackware2616
-----------------------------
then
# lilo
However I have not done mkinitrd.
I was able to log into the brand new kernel. :-)
I have a question and a problem.
Question is why is it not necessary to do mkinitrd?
And the problem is that my USB scroll mouse is not working. The cursor remains at the same place in the middle of the screen even when I move the mouse. What could be the reason for this.
I works perfectly in the kernel 2.4.29.
Any suggestions?

try run #mouseconfig from console and select 'PS/2' as mouse type...
do a #lsmod and ensure that 'usbmouse' module is present when the mouse is plugged in (if it isnt' try #modprobe usbmouse)
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf try the following: (works for me with USB Optical Wireless scroll mouse =)
'Also ensure that the optical light is on on the mouse (when i upgraded from 2.4.xx > 2.6.xx i missed a USB component and didnt work at all... good luck =)

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"

# EndSection

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
