Unhappy GDM/GTK font problems

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and I do not know if this has already been asked ... I've made a search but found nothing ... so, this is my question.

I have a PII/266 running Slack10 (192MB memory, graphics S3VirgeGX2, 17" monitor). When I use runlevel 3 and start X using the "startx" program I have no problems (screen resolution 1024x768, 24 bits/16bits, I've tried both). The problem arises when I select "runlevel 4" or start "gdm" manually ... the screen fonts are so small that I can't be sure that they are there on the screen (they are, for I can still log in, but I can't see what I am typing). Once GNOME is running, I have no more font problems. XDM has no font problems.

If I run some other Window Manager (i.e., BlackBox), and try to use any GTK app. I have the same problem ... the fonts are tiny and unreadable ... if I run "gnome-settings-daemon" the fonts become normal, even if I interrupt it; the fonts will keep on working until I close the session and start another one.

I is as though some configuration file or whatever was not loaded until I run "gnome-settings-daemon" ...

I installed Slack10 in a AMD1.4 box and I have no problems with the fonts ... the only difference is the monitor's size (TFT 15") and that I also installed KDE in this one.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance,

Jacobo Pérez Lajo.

I did it ...

Hi again ... just in case someone has the same problem ... I fixed it by changing the DPI value in the "Xserver" section of the /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf file. Thus, now, when startint the X Server it uses "X -dpi 100" ...

It seems that with my new 17" CRT Monitor, the X Server could not find out the screen size in order to calculate the proper resolution.

Jacobo.
