I don't see a problem here. Nouveau taking over the console ("handover", in other words) when it's loaded during the boot sequence is an expected behavior, IIRC.

If you don't want that, just blacklist nouveau. This won't prevent it to be automatically loaded at X startup. and then if you go back to the console you'll see that nouveaufb is loaded as well.

Well, the problem is that the screen blacks out.

I can login blind, restart blind, or attempt startx, which still stays blank.

blacklisting works for the console, the X window will not go full res though (1920x1200).

I suppose annoyance, would be more descriptive.
