To follow-up on several helpful hints I received in my previous post
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rs-4175586428/ without going off-topic on the [SOLVED] thread.
Toutatis told me here (
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...8/#post5587287 ) that NVidia 367.35 was available ( I was running 367.27 but decided to defer the Nvidia update until after solving the Chromium Issue ).
I applied the Aug 6 Slackware64 ( and Multilib ) Updates for 14.2 and then updated the Nvidia Blob to 367.35 without any apparent ill side-effects ( no black screen and no screen tearing ).
I know about the Black Screen Bug, but I had no idea 'what is screen tearing' because I've never seen it before.
If anyone needs to know, this was a handy Google Search Result
https://www.google.com/search?q=what...13.O_12kwTB00U
In addition to solving my original issue,
SeB also posted a handy script to toggle ForceFullCompositionPipeline in nvidia-settings here
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...8/#post5587338.
I saved the script in my $PATH and tried it out ... didn't seem to change anything good-or-bad but it's there in case I ever need it.
basmadrigal sent a hint about the NVidia Blob possibly messing up vdpau but as far as I can tell, all the files in /var/log/packages/libvdpau-1.1.1-x86_64-1 are intact and match the files in Johnson's original Slackware64 14.2 Package.
Finally, I've always been able to play youtube videos online via firefox / chromium perfectly but when I downloaded and installed Alien's Restricted VLC Package I was unable to play downloaded youtube videos via VLC without nasty pixellation.
I found a work-around here:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=132705
In the VLC Settings: [Tools]->[Preferences]->[Input Codecs], set [Hardware-accelerated-decoding] = [Disabled] ; restart VLC and the test videos I downloaded via youtube-dl ( nice !
https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...rk/youtube-dl/ ) all worked perfectly with that VLC config.
I am sure this means something is still 'off' on my Laptop but I don't have a DVD/BluRay Device so I don't play movies much except from a browser and I likely won't chase this any further for now.
As we say down here in TX, Thanks All Y'All !
