First post... Quick question: kernel headers

Decided I wanted to try slackware for a change. Slack 9 was out and I got it from edmunds enterprises. ANyways, got 3 cd's full of slack.
Install iso, and the 2 source cd's edmunds created /I believe I was one of the first to mention to them that some directories weren't included. Emailed me back saying that they had posted 2 cd's along with a thanks.

Pretty competent at installing stuff... got slack setup created my filesystems, created and swapon'ed the swap space and finished the install.

Been installing some apps /even did a kernel xconfig using the source /willing to mess up my system so I didn't bother saving stuff but for some reason it failed or something but when looking back I got ntfs read support and advanced power management or something /although missing the package for adv. power mgmt. so something worked.... Also went and installed the xfs modules. /going to do a new install and go back to reiserf.
Anyways where are the kernel headers?
Can anyone give me a quick link?
Need the info. to compile my winmodem from hebe.de
source.

Damn impressed, slack after messing with it for a few days, now supports my onboard ac97 sound on my laptop along with my pcmcia network card.

Going to have to do that re-install since I messed too much with the system the last few days discovering the best method to install and how to setup my important stuff. Then I'll leave slack in my laptop for a while.... So far very impressed. Only 1 crash, when I installed and launched adobe 5.0.6 which thrashed x. Just restarted it. Now working again...

The kernel source is usually removed now from the install CD because of disk space limitations. However, you stated that you were provided with 2 CD's for source files. Look to see if they include a "k" directory for the kernel sources. You could as an alternative download the slack pack for the kernel from slackware.at or another mirror if you prefer. (slackware/k) This slack pack would also have the ext3 patches applied like the stock kernel would have. The source/k tree would not, but it offers the patches separately with instructions.

If you try the xfs file system, there is a separate slack package with the xfs module tree for the xfs kernel available as well. Also, that kernel has three patches I think in the source/k/xfs tree as well. If you desire this then I suggest getting everything from the source/k tree. These could also be on your source CD's.

thanks, still haven't solved my problem sadly though

Ok...going to be going in to rebuild the source for the kernel a new /hopefully things will go right.
Just found out that my source cd's were still missing some directories: the source/k/xfs/ directory. Anyways, downloaded all the directories and files for the xfs source.
What steps should I take to build the source: what I'm thinking is
installing the linux-2.4.20.tar.bz2 source package /have the nice directions copied down to do this (compile the source kernel) but how would I apply the xfs patches? And at what point? After I compile the kernel?
The files are:
xfs-2.4.20-all-2003-02-05_23:39-i386.bz2
xfs-2.4.20-buffer-reject.diff.gz
There's also a /source/k/xfs/not-used/ directory with a file:
xfs-2.4.20.noversionchange.gz

I was also pretty sure there were a set of commands to make a a system recognize the kernel headers. So far my uname command tells me I have 2.4.20-xfs. So I'm assuming when the script calls for the headres and finds 2.4.20 source it has a problem since they don't match up. could the above files fix this?
Umm maybe I'll try if pkgtool will do the work of installing the xfs stuff for me.
Well I'll be back at night if it doesn't work out...

If you use the straight kernel source decompress the kernel, then apply the ext3 patches first. Then apply the xfs patches. Then you can proceed to build the new kernel, etc. But the patches need to be applied before building a kernel. Once you read the instructions for installing the ext3 patches, you will know how to apply the xfs patches. Except I think one of them is in bzip2 format and you will need to use bzcat instead of zcat.
