extreme newby question

i decided to give linux a shot on my laptop. the installation is complete. i was expecting to get a gui to popup like in redhat. i am sitting a prompt:
root@xx:#

can someone give me an answer as to how i can boot into the gui. thanks and sorry for the ignorance as i'm sure some of you are laughing at how much an idiot i am.
also since this is so new to me would you recommend i stick with redhat instead of slackware? thanks!

Welcome to Slackware my friend.

if everything went OK, just type

at the prompt.

Good luck!

In addition, to make it boot into a GUI by default, you need to change the default runlevel to 4. In RedHat, it's RL5 for X, but Slack uses 4.

Edit /etc/inittab and change this line:
id:3:initdefault:
to this:
id:4:initdefault:

If you want to customize the configuration, you can type "xorgsetup" then "xorgcfg -textmode" or just the xorgcfg command.
