Just donated, but I really don't like to call it that since Pat is providing a product and service. I plan on throwing him a small donation every month from now on. The way I look at it, what is $5/$10 a month, that is a cup of coffee, I won't even notice.

Yes, I can buy something, but I don't need or want anything. I just want to donate.

Possible?

Edit: Dead link? https://store.slackware.com/cgi-bin/store/slackdonation
I don't think we ever thanked upnort for bringing this to our attention with his desire to donate...Look at what that one sincere question/intention led to.

The 90s HTML site is part of the Slackware aesthetic. The content is another matter.

On another note I must say how heartening it is that so many new users have signed up just to post in this thread. It's a real testament to the effect of Slackware on people's live, and in this case, some people we didn't previously know about. I think it's good that PV spoke his mind and was honest about his issues, this could end up working very productively in the long-run with the help of the community. Glad to be a part of it.
I agree about the content. The content needs to reflect how we use Slackware nowadays. The tools. The repositories. How to do maintenance with some warnings like "coffee is hot" and use only one Slackware mirror. When picking a new mirror make sure the packages are newer before you blindly update which I've seen people do. Also explain Current. Explain how to use Slackbuilds repository with Current. Point to doc.slackware.com for more information on things.

The one thing I recommend to change Slackware.com's functionally is to create a blog roll like mechanism in the main body of the "News" section with entries indexed and there being a "next page" for older entries just like Alien Bob's blog. Then use it to do announcements about updates to Stable and point to the ChangeLog for stable. This would show life as well as remind users that there are updates to Stable that they need to install.

+1

I wouldn't want Pat to be forced to do extras like newsletters etc. for that money, as
i want to support Pat's work on slackware, it's just awesome enough what he does already.

Imagine Pat can do the work he wants to, without having to worry about the income.
That's just enough motivation for me to pay something on a monthly base, and that may be also enough motivation for all who are(or were) dvd/release subscribers.

I'm in as well. Thanks to being subscribed to Alienbob's blog or else I would have missed this much longer since I've not checked these forums for a couple of weeks.

Almost 22 years ago I started playing with Slackware 3.0 from a CD loaned to me by another amateur radio operator in the town I lived in at the time. I was incredulous. Here was an OS that could be shared, legally! I learned so much, not only of the Unix Way but of Free Software, GNU, shell, C, Perl, Python, and on and on from that first humble installation. Though I took a break and was almost exclusively Debian from 2000 through early last year, I'm back in the Slack camp for some stuff. Thanks to Pat's work, I ended up on a far different, and better, life track.

I look forward to seeing how this will develop.

I emailed Pat months ago about making himself a Patreon account (he told me he had been considering it, even by then). I'm so glad he is finally reaching out publicly. I'm hoping the PayPal account will be kept along the Patreon; I won't be able to contribute monthly (lost my job a month ago - the economy is bad here).

Or maybe even upgrade the HTML site so it doesn't look like your OS is from the 90's still.
I like the website. It's simple, straightforward, and it works. Kind of like Slackware.

Gadzooks. I'll keep posted on this thread. As soon as I see some official Patreon info, I'll be there in a heartbeat.

I do still love all the Slackware merch, got 2 polo shirts, Serious Slack shirt; I don't know how feasible would it be if Pat switched to cafepress or something? Just throwing it out there.

I found out about this situation this evening in a Usenet post to alt.os.linux.software, but there was no indication how to donate (I have since corrected that). I then went to Slackware.com looking for a way to donate but came up empty. Not wanting to go to the store to donate, I finally stumbled on theses posts after a Google search. It then took a scan of quite a few pages in this thread to find the post from Pat on how to donate directly to him on page 11.

The bottom line is the fact that Pat needs some much deserved help is spreading by word of mouth so to speak but the link to donate after you realize the need is not that easy to find.

I suspect most people will go to Slackware.com first like I did so perhaps something there on how to donate would be useful. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It could be as simple as adding Q8 under the FAQ that answers the question on how to donate.
