Howdy.
I`m trying to make my adsl work on slack 8.1 but it just won`t go... tried a tutorial that I found that used rp-pppoe but didn`t go quite right... goes time out.
So, if anyone got any idea to help me... I`d be glad!
Fernando
From what I could determine on the model number of the unit you posted it is just a simple ethernet bridge device. If your NIC adapter is loaded, usually through a module, then rp-pppoe should of worked if your ISP service uses PPPoE to function. If your connection is working under Windows, does it use PPPoE? Some services use simple DHCP or static IP assignments. You can identify the quickest and easiest if you have a userid and password then it is probably PPPoE. Do you have any other router or anything on your circuit between the machine and the bridge/modem? If you want to check your loaded modules, use the "lsmod" command to see if it is loaded. If you do not see a module that you know is the NIC, then post your NIC info and we will attempt to identify what module it should use.
Have you discussed with your ISP at all? Most ISP's are not able to help because they do not know Linux. But perhaps they would know if there are others that use it. Do you know if there are others in your location that are able to use the service with Linux? You might want to check the Roaring Penguin web site, I think they have a mail list archive. Perhaps others from your area with the same ISP that might could help. You could search here on LQ using "pppoe" as the search and see if anybody is operating out of your area. You could even try a search for your ISP name and see if it turns up anything. If you are sure that your config is correct and you have setup the debug mode and the requests are being sent then it is probably an ISP issue. Also, make sure your userid and password are correct in both the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file.
If I had the internet service and the modem setup that you have currently, I would look into a small type broadband/DSL router to install. Something like a model from LinkSys or something that supports PPPoE, firewall, NAT, DHCP, etc. Connect it to the modem and configure it to authenticate and activate the service. You should check to see what models might support your ISP. Then you could connect multiple machines and the machines would only need to be confugred for DHCP IP assignment or static if you prefer for the local private network. Something to consider.
