Hi all, as I've been told you for this days, I bought a new computer yesterday.
I installed the slack, everything was ok but I got a problem with the sound.
After the instalation process, I did alsaconf and after alsamixer but it's not making no sound. I know that the speakers and headphone are working because I test all of that at the shop before buy. And there's a strange message at the boot saying that the "Dma is off, so the fsck will be slower". I don't know if it's something related with sound problem. I already try to use a cople of mixers but i'm not able to do it make sound. I hope you can help me?
Did you get the P5VDC-X? You have got to give us a clue if you want help!
Did you install the 2.6 kernel? If not, I strongly recommend it, as newer kernels support newer hardware. Your dma may load without tweaking with a 2.6 kernel. If not you have to investigate the hdparm utility.
Likewise with your sound card. If it is the ADI AD1986A, then it is supported I read, but you are going to need a recent alsa version. I cant say which version right now as the alsa site is down, hopefully it will return soon. (I think you will need alsa-1.0.10rc1 or later)

edit: just had a look at the alsa versions on slackware mirror. Looks like you are going to need current or recompile your kernel for sound support if you did get the board you mentioned before.
Tobyl, I bought the p5vdc-x with the AD1986A sound card; i installed the kernel bare.i 2.4.31; there're no problem with alsa, it found the audio card, configured it and let me change the vol. the problem is that nothing make sound as i said. to install the other kernel i'll have to reinstall all again?
i'll be waiting for more details, Thank you.

Ok, if the modules for alsa loaded ok maybe I was wrong. While the alsa site is down its hard to be sure, but I got the impression from searches that later versions of alsa were needed.
Could you please post the output from the command (as root):
lsmod
also I forgot, you should have your user in the audio group, please check that.

more /etc/group | grep audio
I woundering why alsa-project.org is down today, but its ftp server is still up, I just download its latest 1.0.12 stable version. try it. hope it will help
You have got sound modules loaded ok, so put your user in the audio group (I think sys is a good idea too)
If you have kde running, it is dead easy. Go to Kmenu>System>Kuser, log in as root and click the groups tab
Double click the group you are interested in and add your user name. Do it for audio and sys.
Log out and back in and then run alsamixer again. See if that helps.
As far as using another kernel goes, have you used linux much before?
Slackware 11 is just around the corner, so perhaps you would do well to wait for that, as it will have a recent 2.6 kernel for you.
Alternatively you could learn how to compile your own 2.6 kernel, or investigate the -current branch of Slackware, but I would suggest that you learn your way around Slackware for a bit first. The -current branch in particular is for those who like tinkering, and have a bit of experience.
Lets see if we can get the sound working, and take it from there...

edit: I also notice that you do not have any iptables modules loaded. If you are not inside a firewall, and are connecting to the internet, you had better get something done about that.
Guarddog is easy and works well, although there are lots of other options
Hi Tobyl, i'm a little more than 2 years using linux.
I did what you said about groups, so I logged out and came back but it's still without working.
I don't have idea about how can i solve this problem.
The Alsa site is still down, but as number22 says, you can still use ftp to get drivers etc.
Your sound chip is supported, but you need alsa-1.0.10rc1 or later.
It is difficult for me to tell you how to proceed.
If you want the latest hardware support, you really need to go with a 2.6 kernel. However there is a lot of work involved with this, as you would still need to upgrade your kernel in one way or another (Unless you wait for Slackware 11 or upgrade to the unstable branch (-current)).
However, there is nothing to stop you getting some practice by installing a newer version of alsa on your existing setup.
As your board is quite new, these problems are to be expected (remember Tinkster's comment in your earlier thread)
Have a think about which way you want to go.
regards,

edit: actually Slackware 11 will be available very soon now (I think) or if you are very keen and have plenty of bandwidth, you could download the latest current iso images from
You should be able to get what is effectively Slackware 11 with a 2.6.17.13 kernel
Some people have had difficulties,(eg with usb keyboards) but if you read the last couple of pages from the 'mega thread' at the top of this forum (especially Alien Bob's comments) you should be ok.
Hi Tobyl, I got the sound drivers at the site and installed, so I ran alsaconf but it's still not working. Maybe I'm not ready to use slackware distribution yet. I can't even solve my troubles like this by myself. I don't know what to do now but soon decide.
One idea would be to try a recent knoppix disk. Knoppix is amazing at getting hardware to work, and if it did, you could see how it did it. Otherwise maybe get Slackware 11 when it comes out.
Dont give up!
Tobyl, I'll not be able to get how the sound is working in a distro and after do the same at slack.
I'll install the debian and use it.
Thank you for your help, All the best,
