Determine native screen resolution from shell?

Ok, so I'm a bit lazy and could probably find the answer m'own self eventually but this community is a great resource so I'll prevail on your kindness and expertise.

Is there a way to determine the native resolution of the current console display device from the shell?

I know I can get the current console settings, but I'm looking for the native screen size of the display hardware, whether or not it conflicts with settings.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer, and please feel free to yank my chain if this is something that a simple rtfm or common knowledge should have provided.

If you have a console open in X then 'xrandr --verbose | grep default' may give what you want.
Otherwise you could look at 'read-edid', a program for reading EDID data. See this for more information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extende...ification_data

"fbset" with no options should give you the current resolution.

I know about fbset and that gives me settings, of course, but not hardware info. I need, if possible, to get that info without starting X.

I'll do some more digging and will probably have to end up writing a tool for it.

Thank you both for your help.

You may want to look into `hwinfo`. slackbuilds.org has a SlackBuild for it.

hwinfo was exactly what I needed, and the SlackBuilds performed flawlessly.

Thank you very much, you've saved me quite a bit of time.
