I'm not sure if I misunderstood, but the contents of this thread left me with the impression that spkg might leave a user with a broken package, on upgrade? is this true? or does that only apply to pkgtools for some inexplicable reason not described / mentioned here?

It is true in some cases, because somehow spkg behaves like upgradepkg if the latter is used with the _hidden_and_ forbidden_ --no-paranoid options. This is an issue I have discussed with gapan who now maintains spkg upstream. Fixing this needs to refactor spkg thus time, else it would be already done. Meanwhile spkg -i is used during Slint and Salix installation and also spkg -u in Slint to upgrade big packages like kernel-source.
