--current, hplip won't setup to network capable multifunction printer

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue before I send a note off to Slackware on this.

The --current hplip package can't seem to actually complete the installation of a networked hp printer that has the printer physically plugged into the network.

The hplip app initially does detect the device, then I click next, then it says installation failed as it can't connect to the device.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I am however able to build, and run an older hplip that --current used a while back and it works splendid for adding a printer over the network.

I'm using version hplip-3.9.4b-i486-1 but I know that's not a big help to the project.

Anyone else noticing this?

Thanks.

What printer model is it? Some of HP's printers are only network able through their Windows drivers (I have one at home). The only way their network capability is OS independent is if you plug them into an HP Jetdirect print server.

The printer is an hp officejet j6400. It's using a fixed ip address on the network.

Other Slackware versions, and win xp can see/print to it fine, just tested a few minutes ago. As does my Slackware --current if I use version hplip-3.9.4b-i486-1 from a while ago, and not what Slackware has in it's repo at this time for --current.

You might want to check the supported printers page for hplip-3.11.1 (for 13.317rc3). Yours may have been dropped.

Add your user to the 'lp' and 'sys' groups
Change the 'Network discovery method' to 'SLP' in the HP Device Manager - Setup 'Advanced Options'
hplip should now be able to connect to the device.

I have the same problem for a while and a few versions now.

But hplip does the same with other distributions like debian. So in my oppinion the problem is hplib ....

Anyway, using slp and manuell discovery works to setup the printer.
