After some tweaking I think fonts look pleasing again. I basically followed some recipes on Dugan Chen's page

http://duganchen.ca/writings/slackware/fonts/

which means I have a self-compiled freetype package yet again. Actually it is quite disturbing that in this day and age you still need to jump through so many hoops just to get decent fonts on a linux desktop.
