The problem seems to be that there were serious issues with it and the people who were able to fix it didn't use it and didn't want to spend the time fixing something they don't use. If someone has the ability and desire to fix it and follows through and submits a patch to the kernel developers, then I imagine they'd accept it, assuming it fixes the "various nasty small special cases".
