Double Oops

AllRightThen no more 4.5.4. Sorry, thought you'd have a choice there for a current 4.5.x as well as the 4.6 pre-release. OK then. Let me see...OK found it! This time I ceased all other activity so as not to make bad assumptions. What you can do is go HERE and get the whole current iso that includes KDE v.4.5.4 (it's small). Then you can either burn or or mount it as you like and do your upgrade. Read UPGRADE.TXT first and you're good to go.

I would strongly advise against inexperienced users installing -current. There is a reason -current is not a stable release, and if KDE in 13.1 was working before it should work again.

Uncomment an appropriate mirror in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors (assuming you haven't already) and run the following as root (in the CLI, not in X):
Code:
# slackpkg update
# slackpkg reinstall kde
I believe that should reinstall the kde/ series of packages, which would eliminate any possibility of your KDE installation being corrupt. If it still doesn't work, then it's something you have done to your system (a stray configuration somewhere, or a permissions issue, or something to that effect), or a more serious system corruption that for whatever reason is only showing itself when you use KDE. As others have said, post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log immediately after starting KDE and watching it crash (if you start X again, the log will be overwritten [and probably moved to Xorg.0.log.old], so make sure you're posting the right log). It may be beneficial to post more of your .xsession-errors file (maybe use pastebin.com if it won't fit here) as well.

tried that, after slackpkg reinstall kde, it said kde was not found in the list of packages (something like that). tried kdm too, with no luck. I'll try to get the xorg.0.log and see what it says

The error message 'startkde: Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation.' arises from /usr/bin/startkde when it attempts to start kcminit.

The script includes this comment:
Quote:
# * kdeinit starts klauncher first.
# * Then kded is started. kded is responsible for keeping the sycoca
# database up to date. When an up to date database is present it goes
# into the background and the startup continues.
# * Then kdeinit starts kcminit. kcminit performs initialisation of
# certain devices according to the user's settings
This suggests that you have changed some device settings that are incompatible.
Have you tried reinstalling the nVidia driver?

Okay, so solved my problem

I was trying to compile another slackbuild, and I got an error with libxml2 on the build, which I've had a lot of trouble with in the past, despite having installed it from -current and from source.

So anyway, I saw this error and decided to see if it was causing my problems because I know I'd reinstalled it since my last reboot. So, su in terminal
Code:
 removepkg libxml2
exit to CLI, xwmconfig to change back to KDE, and startx. Poof, my problem is solved.

This seems like a pretty critical bug with libxml2, IMO. Should I report it somewhere?

It works fine here. In fact, lsof shows that it is in use by konqueror.

If you installed libxml2 yourself from source at one point, you should be aware that without a critical patch the latest version will not only fail to work with existing binaries but will create binaries that will not work once the problem is corrected. If you've cleaned out any residue from /usr/local then you may still have something like that (a shared library, perhaps) on your system.
