Console gibberish

Hi all,
Installed Slack 8. Having problems with console outputting apparent gibberish. When i ls or dir the shell returns some items i.e. folders and items that are are followed by an @ sign (links?) but no file names. Instead it spews out loads of *asterisks*. Also when trying to read some man pages and or under a second or third virtual console text is just gibberish. i cant identify the text at all, doesnt even look like any sorta code or ascii characters.

Here's some stuff i guess you might need to know:-
1 meg cirrus logic video card
No X installation (although some of the folders exist)
I, by accident, applied a screen font during the install (how can i change this?)

dont know if any of this is relavent.

thanks for any help.

cheers

Post your /etc/rc.d/rc.font and /etc/rc.d/rc.keymap to see.
