Kad - cheers for that, not only did it sort out the name properly, it cured Sendmail's hissy fit too

esound is the sound server used by the gnome window manager
KDE alsa has a sound server called aRTs but thats not the solution i had the same problem a while ago but im not sure why it doesnt do it now
