What do you need to know? Do you just want to know what "compiling" means, or is there a specific program that you are trying to compile that is causing problems?

Welcome to LinuxQuestions!

Compiling is making an executable out of a source code file.
If the file is a C source code file, for example : test.c, this is the way to 'compile' it.

gcc test.c -o test

After compiling you could run it like this...

./test

Note: Type this in your terminal

'pkgtool' 'setup' (or something like) will rerun the keyboard option you had during install. As far as compiling, there's a thread somewhere all about it (along with zillions of others) - shortest answer is, if everything is basic and works:

./configure
make
su
make install

though not every app will need './configure' and some will need a lot more.

Welcome aboard.
