need help compiling - newbie

I am trying to build a small web server to learn Apache on. I don't want to use the version bundled with redhat, I want to learn how to compile my own.

I have an apache book, and I am following along, but here is where I'm stuck.

I issue the configure command and it says:
"no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH"

How do I install an acceptable C Compiler. And which is a good compiler.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

since you're using rh9.0, it should have come with gcc 3.x

do a
gcc --version
, followed by a .
which gcc
to show you where gcc is.

since it says that it cant find a compiler, check your PATH from your terminal with:
echo $PATH
do you see your path to GCC in what $PATH is? if not ... edit your shell rc file (or if you want your profile under /etc) to include the path to gcc at startup.

hope that helps.

Your post really helped!

gcc was not installed, I installed it now, and it is working fine.
